Wedding Table Centrepieces by Shape: A Floral Design Guide

As a luxury wedding florist, I’ve had the fun of designing for all kinds of venues. Some layouts look best with long tables, while others look best with round ones or even a mix. And when it comes to creating wedding table centrepieces, the shape of the tables dictates the final look. Today, I’m sharing my guide to the most common table shapes and centrepiece options for each. If you recently booked your venue and want some design inspiration, you’re in the right place!

Round

Round tables look best with a single floral centrepiece surrounded by candles. You can choose a low centrepiece (under 12 inches) or a tall centrepiece mounted on a pedestal (over 24 inches). That way, guests have clear sightlines for easier conversation. If you’ll only have round tables in your reception space, mixing low and tall centrepieces can create a more varied, interesting look. My favourite type of centrepiece for a round table is a floral meadow or footed compote arrangement with full blooms and loose, airy stems.

Rectangle

A rectangular table allows space for multiple smaller centrepieces, arranged loosely down the middle. I love mixing Ikebana arrangements and bud vases in various shapes and sizes. Alternatively, a collection of low floral meadows creates a beautiful runner effect. Like designing for a space with round tables, it’s most interesting to showcase different looks throughout the room. We can do that by colour-blocking the florals or by alternating how they’re displayed (for example, solo or mixed with greenery).

Family-Style

Family-style tables are rectangular, but with even more length to play with. As above, I like to mix and match. Whether that’s with a collection of bud vases and Ikebanas or arrangements of varying heights (always low or high enough to allow items to pass across the table), contrast creates interest. Embracing florals’ different characteristics and layering them is key to an inspired design!

From round tables to rectangles, there are so many interesting options for wedding table centrepieces. And by varying your centrepieces, even slightly, you invite your guests to look a little closer and appreciate the florals’ unique beauty. At Wild Vogel, my arrangements are whimsical and a little wild, just like your favourite blooms. I love to work with flowers’ organic shapes to create something that reflects your story.
